Balenciaga Fall 2019 - Runway Review
March 4, 2019

Strobe lights and a pulsating illuminated ceiling set the tone for Balenciaga's fall show at Luc Besson’s Cité du Cinema building, but the collection was grounded in the real, city streets of Paris. Balenciaga logo branded shopping bags and leather water bottle holders emblazoned with "I love Paris" were among the featured accessories peppered throughout the show, fashion fodder for a subversive yet saleable collection.
Tailoring was at the forefront of this collection. Sharp and tailored, the outerwear, as has been the trend this season, featured slightly exaggerated shoulders. Complementing that ethos were huge high-necked collars, cagoules with leg of mutton sleeves and crisp leather coats. Creative director Demna Gvasalia's precision is intense -- as evident by the sweeping outerwear pieces and column dresses with their squared-off proportions. This is, after all, a house known for its avant-garde silhouettes, having birthed the cocoon coat and puff ball dress.
