Christian Dior Spring 2020 - Runway Review

An "inclusive garden" set the tone for the Christian Dior Spring 2020 show. Nestled amongst more than 100 trees (donated to community gardens following the show), Maria Grazia Chiuri, inspired by archival photographs of Catherine Dior (Monsieur Dior's sister), showered her surrounded by flowers in her garden. Nicknamed Miss Dior, and who the house's first fragrance was named after, Catherine was an essential protagonist to the brand.

The impact of this inspiration coupled with Catherine's love of gardening was evident throughout this picturesque collection: floral-embroidered pieces, straw hats and plenty of textured raffia -- all of which were showcased in a forest-like setting. Indeed, these were pieces to covet, wear and love. Jackets were boxy, pants slouched from a dropped crotch, dresses grazed the ankle ever just so. Bleached denim ombré pieces punctuated the collection throughout. Footwear came in the form of a reasonable hiking boot, a logged espadrille and a grounded flat. For the finale -- and what a finale it was! -- an endless parade of dresses were successively more beautiful than the next. Lace, raffia, jacquard, silk and tulle came printed, appliquéd, embroidered, crystal-ed and filigreed -- all signifiers that these are quintessential buy-now-wear-forever works of art.
