Rosie Assoulin Spring 2017 - Runway Review
September 12, 2016
Rosie Assoulin’s clothes are made for Instagram. The cheery designer’s equally cheery spring collection saw the designer transform a Meatpacking District studio in a happy-go-lucky shoreside tableau, complete with mountains of salt water taffy, palm fronds and dunes of styrofoam peanuts.
Assoulin, who won the 2016 Swarovski Collective Award, sought inspiration from “Life,” or as she elaborates, “It’s for wherever your life is taking you—sometimes you go big somewhere and go small somewhere else. It’s life.” The exuberant garments were chock full of embroideries, bold prints (new for the designer), all-the-rage denim and must-have accessories done with Paul Andrew (shoes) and Morgenthal Frederics (sunglasses).
Among the highlights were a robin’s-egg blue denim jumpsuit, a shirt bedazzled with smiley faces (a riff off those plastic shopping bags) and an “umbrella” halter top and matching skirt rendered in large multicolored fan-like panels.
