Urban Zen Fall 2016 - Runway Review

Adopting the buy-now-wear-now philosophy that she’s long been a champion for, Donna Karan staged her latest collection for Urban Zen—a fall showing titled “The Alchemist”—inside her Manhattan studio space. There, amidst live music, live artisans and even a live falcon, a feeling of raw, tribal energy pervaded the surroundings—a modern day desert oasis, if you will.

Showcased entirely in shades of black, brown and burgundy, the collection offered the relaxed luxe one has come to expect from the Donna Karan ethos. Outerwear styles included padded suede jackets, reversible shearling gilets and kimonos and a tufted-silk coat with ever the slightest hint of sheen. The idea is for the client to wear what she wants, when she wants, Karan emphasized. Indeed, much of the garments can be worn a myriad of ways thanks to the number of wraps and ties featured.

Karan layered on the knits with wont abandon, but as haphazard as they looked, they were incredibly luxe and, in the case of a textured cashmere wrap, incredibly warm. Shown with suede jodhpur pants and thick leather toggle belts, it was an earthy, regal vibe that’s distinctively Donna.
